Manuel “Manny” Simon has been a world languages teacher at Stuyvesant High School in New York since September 2007 and is also the dean of security and student affairs. In addition to his regular teaching duties, Manny Simon is involved with several activities at the school, including advising and volunteering with the Red Cross Club.
Stuyvesant’s Red Cross Club is among the hundreds of high school clubs across the United States that do volunteer work on behalf of the American Red Cross (ARC). The ARC provides “five lines of service”: disaster services, emergency training services, blood services, service to the US Armed Forces (active members, veterans, families), and international services.
The Stuyvesant Red Cross Club provides its students with volunteer service opportunities in the school and the city. The purpose of the club is to encourage community service, connect students with their community, provide meaningful and convenient ways to volunteer, and help connect students with each other and fellow volunteers while contributing to their community.
Within the school, club activities have included hosting the annual Health Fair, serving as tour guides at school open houses, helping at parent-teacher conferences, assisting with alumni reunions, and volunteering at blood drives. Outside of the school, volunteer events have included fundraising for disaster relief, refereeing for wheelchair basketball tournaments, soliciting mask/PPE donations during the COVID pandemic, and more.
In addition, because Stuyvesant club is affiliated with the ARC, members have access to its Greater New York City network as well as special ARC events and projects.
